LHS alumna heads giant network’s news channel
GLENDA M.GLENDA M. GLORIA, a member of MMSU Laboratory High School Batch 1981, currently serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC), the only 24-hour television station which delivers news \"when it happens, as it happens.\"
Hailing from Badoc town, she is the daughter of Mrs. Erlinda Magbual Gloria, former vice president for academic affairs of Northwestern University. Her high school teachers included Prof. Juanita A. Licuan, Prof. Tomas I. Que, current Laboratory Schools Director Vicente A. Trinidad, and DepEd Laoag City Superintendent Araceli C. Pastor, who was Gloria’s teacher in her favorite subject, English. Prof. Trinidad remembers Gloria as a ‘very eloquent student.’
The media executive, who took up BA Journalism at the University Tomas and MA in Political Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science, remains in touch with her LHS batchmates, which include Laoag City Mayor Michael V. Farinas and P/Supt. Sterling Reymund Blanco, Laoag City police chief.
Prior to joining ABS-CBN, Gloria, together with fellow veteran journalist Maritess Vitug, founded and worked as editor of Newsbreak magazine and wrote the book, Under the Crescent Moon, which won the National Book Award in 2001. She also worked with The Manila Times.
While Gloria’s first job was with the newly-founded Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1985, her first byline appeared in the community newspaper, The Ilocos Times, where she volunteered during college summer breaks.
She will be honored by UST as outstanding alumna in the field of mass media in ceremonies to be held March 16.
